‘It Follows,’ walks off the screen and into your nightmares

Zachary Halsey, Staff Writer

Do you have those dull nights at home where you are looking for something to do but just can’t think of anything? Want to watch a movie you haven’t seen before, but can’t make it to the theater because you are strapped for cash? I am here to tell you that there are some fantastic movies that come out every year that many of us don’t even hear about. One of these films in question would have to be the striking horror/thriller indie movie “It Follows.”

The movie focuses on the life of a teenager, Jay Height (Maika Monroe), when a fun date night with the boy she is seeing is turned into a nightmare. Jay ends up sleeping with the young man at the end of the night, only to wake up tied to a chair with him explaining that now that they’ve slept together something will be after her. Jay spends the rest of the film trying to get away from the new world of horrors that she was unknowingly thrown into. The creature stops at nothing to get you. It doesn’t eat or sleep. It just spends it’s time walking after you.

Now before your appetite for this movie gets too insatiable, be warned because if indie movies and music is not your scene, then this film might not be for you.

The first reason I have to say why this film really sticks out is the whole premise of the film relies on taking some of the basic rules of horror movies and flips them upside down. You learn right away that the only way the monster comes after you, is if you have sex with the person it is currently after. Usually in horror films, if you have sex, you die. Granted getting intimate with someone was what got the protagonist in trouble in the first place, but I still thought it was an interesting idea on how to deter the creature.

Another thing about this movie that makes my skin crawl, from not only terror, but excitement, is it does not rely on the big jump scares or gory moments to put you on edge. Accompanied with a great soundtrack and interesting camera shots, the terror is allowed to build and eats at you psychologically.

By now you are probably thinking, “Man, this monster must be creepy looking on a Freddy Kruger level. Well yes and no. While every time I saw the creature, my heart started pumping, it was not because of its looks. The creature looks like a normal person. It can change its form too. And it just walks. It doesn’t run. So there are scenes in the film of the main characters just talking and in the background you just see a person walk in from nowhere and slowly make a beeline to the girl. It is great because you feel like you are with the characters the entire time and are just as paranoid. It could be your next-door neighbor. It could be your girlfriend or boyfriend. You don’t know.

Monroe does a great job in her performance by trying to get the audience to see how helpless her situation is. She knows that while the monster is walking, and taking a long time to get close to her, it will eventually find her. This leads to her staying up and becoming even more paranoid since it can look like anybody.

This is one of my new favorite horror movies because I have never seen anything like it.

So grab a couple of friends, turn out the lights, and prepare to sleep with a night light and your eyes on the door, because it doesn’t run after you. It doesn’t give up. “It Follows.”
