WSC starts their beach volleyball season

The Wayne State College Wildcats lost 5-0 to Nebraska on Friday, Feb. 24 in the beach volleyball opener in Lincoln at the Hawks Championship Center.  

The number one pair for the Wildcats was Taya Beller and Allie Petry against Nebraska’s Bekka Allick and Lexi Rodriguez. For the number one pair, Nebraska won 21-11 and 21-9. A similar story for the number two pairing of Kelsie Cada and Jordan Mccormick lost against UNL’s Harper Murray and Merritt Bason 21-20 and 21-6. 

The number three pairing of Isabelle Vacek and Rachel Walker faired a little bit better losing to Ally Batenhorst and Bergen Reilly 21-19 and 21-12. WSC’s number four pairing of Ally Beresford and Brook Peltz faired similarly to the number three pairing, losing to Nebraska’s Lindsay Krause and Laney Choboy 21-16 and 21-11. 

The WSC Wildcats faired best in their number five matchup with Maggie Brahmer and Havyn Heinz against UNL’s Caroline Jurevicius and Hayden Kubik 21-19 and 21-16. In the exhibition match WSC’s Grace Baumert and Taylor Bunjer scored extra points in the second set loosing 22-20 and in the first set loosing 21-14. The Wildcats lost all 5 of the matches and the exhibition match against UNL. 

Later Friday afternoon, the Wildcats went up against Park University of Missouri losing 4-1. Park is now 1-0 on the season and WSC drops to 0-2. 

The WSC Wildcats came in with a win in the number two paring of Cada and McCormick won 21-13 and 21-9 against Pirates’ Jullia Alvarez and Szonja Stollar.  

Two other matches went three sets. The number three pairing of Vacek and Walker lost in the third set 15-11 going 21-19 in the first and 17-21 in the second. Beresford and Peltz lost in the third 15-9 going 23-25 in the first and 21-9 in the second. 

The number one pairing of Beller and Petry lost to Debora Bernardi and Giovanna Belo of Park 21-18 and 21-13. The number five pairing of Brahmer and Heinz lost to Laura Danezzi and Mafalda Bras 21-18 and 21-16. In the exhibition match, Baumert and Bunjer of WSC defeated Amra Kovac and Luna Martins 21-16 and 21-19. 

The WSC Wildcats play next Tuesday, March 7 against Park University at Gilbert, Arizona starting their spring break trip.
