The Bulldogs beat the Wildcats who beat the Huskies

Wayne State women’s soccer team played Friday, having traveled to Crookston, Minn. where they fell 0-1 and Sunday to St. Cloud State where they came away with a 3-1 victory. The Wildcats are now 8-5-3 on the season.

Minnesota Duluth scored the only goal of the match, which came in the 11th minute of the second half to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 win over the Wildcats.

The first half was scoreless with a 7-2 shot advantage in favor of the Bulldogs and a lone goal coming from Lizzy Fontes in the 56:44 mark of the game. Both teams were called for six fouls and UMD held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

Senior Valerie Hernandez had three of Wayne State’s six shots with two on goal to lead the Wildcats. Senior Kelsey Engstrom added one shot on goal while goalie Kylie Comba was credited with 8 saves and allowing just one goal.

“Friday’s loss made us realize how important each of the games we had left to play are,” sophomore Natalie Rech said. “We went into Sundays game against St. Cloud with that mindset.”

Sunday’s game against St. Cloud started off quickly with an own goal at the 1:45 mark of the first half to give the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage.

WSC took a 2-0 lead after Engstrom found the back of the net, scoring her first goal of the season at the 12th minute of the first half. The Cats scored another goal in the half in the 39th minute when Rech found the net on an unassisted goal, which gives her four on the year. That put WSC in front 3-0 after one half.

St. Cloud would not be shut out with just under 17 minutes to play when Kelli Santo Paulo scored a goal to make the final score 3-1. Rech and Engstrom led WSC with one goal each, while Hannah Knight had a team-high three shots on goal.

Comba was credited with six saves and just one goal allowed.

“The team is feeling pretty good. Unfortunately we couldn’t get a result in the Duluth game, but we played great game against St. Cloud,” Engstrom said. “We’re happy we get to play one more game at home before we take our last game at Southwest.”

Wayne State will play its final home game of the season on Friday, hosting Sioux Falls in a 3 p.m. contest, followed by the regular season finale on Sunday at Southwest Minnesota State starting at 1 p.m.
