Wildcats grab second place at Nebraska Intercollegiate invite

The Wayne State College women’s golf team came in second with a total score of 653 over two days at the Nebraska Intercollegiate Invitational tournament on Oct 6 and 7. In the tournament, there were a total of 6 schools. The University of Nebraska Kearney got first place with a total score of 643, Wayne State was second with a score of 653, and Bellevue University took third place with 676.

”It was great to see the team have a lot of positives come out of this week,” Head Women’s Golf Coach Nick Swaney said. “We needed to have a good tournament for our team’s confidence. Abby, Saffire and Jazmine all had a great week and put themselves and our team in position to win.”

The Wildcats’ best performer was junior Abbigail Brodersen who came in third place overall with a score of 158, shooting 76 in the first round and 82 in the second. Jazmine Taylor, a senior, was right behind Broderson in fourth place with a score of 159, just one stroke behind, shooting 82 and 77 in her rounds. Sophomore Saffire Sayre from Wayne State and Maria Pinedo from Bellevue University both tied for fifth place with a total score of 160. Sayre had a score of 78 in the first round and 82 in the second, while Pinedo scored 84 in the first round and 76 in the second.

“We competed well at the event. UNK has a great team that made the National Tournament last year and they had home course advantage this week,” Coach Swaney said. “We put pressure on them all the way to the finish of the event. Unfortunately, we didn’t execute well enough the last couple holes to win this weekend.”

Wayne State will finish their fall 2023 schedule at the Midwest Classic in Warrensburg, Missouri on October 16 and 17.

“The Midwest Classic will have a very talented field of all the best teams in the region,” Coach Swaney said. “We are hoping to build off this week and have a better showing against those top rated teams in the region. Finishing in the top half the field and competing well against NSIC teams at the event would be a good way to finish the fall for us.”
