The Judas Goat Open Mic

The Judas Goat Open Mic will be taking place on Oct. 25.

There is a group of students and a faculty member that sit together and plan out the event and decide which theme they want the poetry slam to be.

“It was very simple, honestly, seeing as everyone agreed to host a Halloween themed open in October,” JR Brown said. “Last semester, everything was planned at the very last minute, I invited a friend to come play music and sort of ran with it, but this year it’s a little more structured.”

The event is Halloween themed, and they are encouraging everyone to dress in costume to attend.

“Each open mic night has always been some sort of celebration,” Brown said.

The Beaumont is booked regularly for each event, especially in recent years as well.

“We finished working on the last book from this spring, and now we’re forward to showing off the hard work us students have put into this project as a whole,” Brown said.

Last time there was an open mic night, it was 40 mile an hour winds with 20-degree weather, so it was not a great open mic night.

“The open mic night hasn’t, for me, been an event that lots of people come to, and in some ways I’m grateful for that,” Brown said.

This event makes Brown feel more personal, but also responsible for guiding her students to submit their work to the open mic night so the people can present their work.

“This year, I’m hoping to see a huge turnout. It would be awesome to watch people read their work and showcase their stuff,” Brown said. “There is no one in charge of picking people like that. The emcee, me, is responsible for helping motivate the crowd into doing that. I have been known to just select people at random, and in fact, I will do that, but the open mic should be seen as a place to share whatever you want, and you’re not obligated to do anything you don’t want to do.”

“The more people talk and share their poetry, the less you have to listen to my poetry” Brown said.
