Not all heroes wear capes

Have you heard the phrase, “not all heroes wear capes?” It has never been truer for me more than today. While searching Facebook to look for something to write for this column I stumbled on a headline about every college kid’s favorite card game, Cards against Humanity.

In a bid to stymie Donald Trump’s border wall the game company bought a plot of land directly in the way of the proposed wall. The company announced this year’s holiday promotion, titled Cards against Humanity Saves the World. This goes above and beyond their previous holiday promotion of the Holiday Hole of 2016, when they asked for donations to just dig a hole.

“Donald Trump is a preposterous golem who is afraid of Mexicans. He is so afraid that he wants to build a twenty-billion dollar wall that everyone knows will accomplish nothing. So we’ve purchased a plot of vacant land on the border and retained a law firm specializing in eminent domain to make it as time-consuming and expensive as possible for the wall to get built,” a statement from the company read.

For just $15 the company will send you six surprises in the month of December, including a map of the land they purchased and a certificate of promise to fight the wall. And no purchase would be complete without some new game card.

“It will be fun, it will be weird and if you voted for Trump you might want to sit this one out,” the companies’ new website reads.

Being self-owned, this company can get away with a bit more than normal game companies. And I for one am very happy the company chose to fight this fight.

Max Temkin, co-creator of the game, said in a recent interview that this is not a play to stop the wall altogether. For that, he says, we need to win elections and hold political power. According to Temkin this is a funny way to protest and possibly delay the wall.

In the FAQ section, the company had this to say to anyone who is mad they are getting political and want to cancel their order: “We’d like to cancel the 2016 election, but neither of us is going to get what we want.”

You remember when I said not all heroes wear capes? Yeah, me too. A card game that is self-described as “the party game for horrible people,” and brings out the worst sense of humor in people, is taking up a fight for others. In their own admission this isn’t something that will change anything, but this a humorous step in the right direction.
