Mercy Meals sign-up
November 1, 2017
The Lutheran Student Fellowship (LSF) group on campus will be hosting a volunteer opportunity for students through Mercy Meals on Nov. 7 and 8.
Mercy Meals is a nonprofit organization that allows volunteers to package nourishing food that is then delivered to children in need throughout the world. This organization has numerous events in different locations. Every year LSF hosts one of these events. LSF is a group that meets twice a week for a devotion at Cup of Grace, the café across from the Willow Bowl.
“For the event, we are given some dried food that we pack into bags and each bag has about six meals in it,” said Rebecca Bonsall, president of LSF. “Then, we send them back to Norfolk, where they are sent around the world by Orphan Grain Train.”
LSF encourages students to sign up today from 11 to 1 p.m. outside the Upper Cafeteria. The event takes place at Cup of Grace on Nov. 7 and 8 from 12-8 p.m.
“Last year we packed approximately 46,000 meals with the help of over 200 students,” Bonsall said.
Anyone can donate for this event through the Mercy Meals website. Also, students who miss the sign-up date or would like to sign up a group can contact Rebecca at [email protected].
“It is so rewarding to see all the boxes of food we send out,” Bonsall said. “I’m actually from Norfolk and have helped with Mercy Meals there, so to be able to actually host the event now is very exciting to me.”
