Throughout WSC, there are numerous activities and clubs that are available for people to get involved with, such as intramural sports, arts and media clubs and many others.
A lot of clubs steal the show when it comes to students joining them, but the Ukulele club is unique in that many might not have heard about it.
Jaci Rutherford, the vice president of the Ukelele club, discussed what she thought made the club stand out.
“I wouldn’t say there are a lot of clubs that get together to play an instrument together,” Rutherford said.
She said they are not a very formal club. They are laid back and welcome all to join their club or attend one of their meetings.
The club meets every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Ley Theatre of the Fine Arts building.
“We go through some of the simple Ukulele chords, teaching them to the other members.” Rutherford said. Some nights, they have free play where they will play any kind of song, as well as learning all new songs together in a group.
“Our favorite song that we play is called ‘I’m Yours,” Rutherford said. “We also play Riptide, which is one of the easiest songs to play on the Ukulele.”
Since the Ukulele club is somewhat new, they are focused on expanding.
“As of right now, the club is just a get together and learn to play.” Rutherford said.
She didn’t rule out the future of possibility of setting up events for the club. For now, though, she said they are mostly focused on getting the word out to others who might be interested in joining.
Rutherford also added that she learned a new appreciation for the club. She always had a passion for the instrument, but being invested in the club has changed her perspective on things.
“It has definitely helped me grow an appreciation for not just playing the instrument, but also teaching it to other people and it’s really fun to help grow their love for playing.” Rutherford said.
The Ukulele is a unique instrument that many don’t pay much attention to. The Ukulele club wants to help shed some light on it, as well as help others learn the ukulele and get involved on the WSC campus.
