The Softball Club was one of the many clubs that you could sign up for at the club fair on Jan. 29. This club offers the ability to play at a higher level, but with low commitment. Its purpose is to be fun, while still allowing a “competitive and athletic outlet for athletes,” according to their website.
Last year, they only played against one school in a series of three games. They played the University of Iowa, and though they ended up losing in those matches, it was still very competitive and hard-fought.
“We plan to do the same thing as last semester and try to use every moment as a learning moment,” Drew Kratochvil, the captain of the Softball Club, said. “We are too new of a team to take everything seriously. We focus on teaching girls multiple positions so they have more chances to play.”
Even though last year’s matches didn’t turn out the way the team had hoped, they still learned a lot from those games. The team also figured out what went right and what went wrong, so they can continue to grow from it.
“Personally, I am trying to focus on keeping the grades up, while also being involved in club softball,” Taylor Sloger, a player on the team, said. “In the past, when I was involved in sports in high school, I let the sports come first, and I needed to get out of that mentality, making it the other way around.”
Even though it’s a club team, the girls still have to put in a lot of hard work for the team. They are expected to meet every Monday and Thursday for practice. They are preparing for their first matchup against Iowa State on March 23.
“I plan to keep seeking input from the other girls,” Kratochvil said. “ It’s all of our first year on the team, and it’s a big deal to figure out obstacles such as planning practices, planning games, and purchasing items that we need.”
