Looking forward to elections

Three new members inducted to Student Senate

Student Senate will have its hands full in the coming weeks with elections, allocation money and continuing their regular duties in governance.

Senate met this past Sunday, this time with the proper quorum that was absent in the last meeting due to weather.

In fact, Senate added three new members including, Rachel Von Fange, Brandon Reese and Logan Herring. Herring tried previously to be a Senator in the fall of 2014.

The proceedings continued with the long-awaited chair appointment of the Student Government Committee. Kelley Robinson and Reese will serve as co-chairs of the committee, which will be busy with the upcoming elections.

The applications for President and Vice-President will be due Feb. 20 (Friday), while the elections will take place March 3 and March 4.

New leadership is not the only thing on the ballot this semester. Changes to the constitution that were approved by Senate will now need to be ratified by the student body. The changes to the constitution are mostly procedural, but are nonetheless important, as they are the new and improved rules for seats filling on the Senate.

These changes came in the wake of Senate not being filled to capacity in the early part of the academic year, with lackluster representation of the departments. Former President Nolan Janzen did his part to fill the necessary seats on Senate, but came to a crossroads with various constitutional errors and bureaucracy. Once the Student Government Committee revised the typo-filled constitution, the changes were approved, and will now need further approval from the campus community. The Senate strongly encourages people to get out and vote March 3 and March 4 at the tables near the upper cafeteria.

In the meantime, Senate will meet again on March 1, which will be the last time Senate meets before the election.
