Every year Wayne State College has a tradition called Lil’ Sibs Weekend. Residents get the opportunity to invite their little siblings to spend a weekend on campus and see for themselves what life at college looks like. The resident’s little sibling along with the rest of their family arrive to campus on Saturday for a variety of events. These events included a showing at the planetarium, yard games, face painting, air brush hats, and meals. Residents were also able to show their family around campus and give them a feel of the experience of going to college at Wayne State.
“I got to walk around campus with my sister, and she showed me where she goes to class,” younger sister Bentlie Roan said.
After all the activities, the families made their way over to the football game. This year the Wildcats played the University of Mary and took a convincing win of 42-7. Families got to enjoy the football game, marching band, dance and cheer team and concessions stand. After the football game, the families would say their goodbyes and leave the little sibling with the campus resident. During this one-on-one time, the resident and their little sibling had the opportunity to hang out in the dorms and experience life in college.
“I think the best part was being able to see my sister and have her stay here with me,” resident Savanah Roan said. “She is my baby sister, so she’s like my kid.”
On Sunday, residents and their little sibling could attend a craft event in the student center, where resident hall assistants helped with fun crafts. Lil’ Sibs Weekend will continue to be a memorable tradition as residents are able to grow closer to their siblings.
“I definitely did grow closer with my little sibling,” Roan said. “She is only ten so it’s a little harder, but we did get closer.”
In addition, families had the opportunity to experience the atmosphere of Wayne State College and what it means to be a Wildcat.
