A common New Year’s resolution for many is to increase their physical activity. Forms of exercise could include weight lifting and cardio; there are different approachs to achieve fitness goals. The recreation center on the Wayne State College campus offers a variety of fitness classes for students to attend.
These include cycling, pilates and yoga classes. These classes are led by instructor Angela Nuss, and they are open to all students. The length of each class varies from an hour to two hours and are available during the week. Most classes occur in the late afternoon or evening. A waiver must be signed electronically before attending any of the classes.
There is no fee for students, making it not only accessible but affordable. WSC’s fitness classes provide many physical and mental benefits that are great for achieving that New Year’s resolution and fostering healthy habits.
Freshman Anslie Koethe shared why she enjoys the Cycle 360 class she attended.
“It helps me stay active during the semester, which is something really important to me,” she said.
Freshman Chelsea Embury states the benefits she receives from attending the yogalates class.
“I did enjoy the class,” she said. It helped me to relax from the stress of school, especially as someone going into pre-radiography.”
Students have enjoyed the classes and have felt they help most by easing stress from schoolwork. Overall, fitness classes play a positive role in student health on campus. The structured environment of the classes can help beginners stay motivated and feel confident in what they are doing. Group classes also offer students a community and a chance to them make new friends.
According to Koethe, spots for the class fill up quickly so it is best for students to view the website periodically to secure a spot. If students do not get a spot, new dates are released for the following weeks. With the start of the new year, students have the opportunity to sign up for weekly fitness classes to meet their fitness goals.
