Wayne State College raised over $125,000 during this year’s annual Giving Day, but they are not done yet.
Wayne held its annual Giving Day on Friday, April 17, to raise money for scholarships, Wildcat athletics and academic programs for WSC students. The campus asks alumni and friends to donate to the campus this day every year. The goal this year was $125,000, and the school reached its goal within a day. This day gives opportunities to students to be able to accept scholarships and attend college.
“I would not be able to go to college if it wasn’t for my scholarships,” WSC football running back Dawson Forgy said. “Giving day is the only reason I get to be here doing what I love, playing football.”
The donations can be directed towards a specific scholarship or organization. The campus says that the size of the donations does not matter, and each gift is directed towards a program at WSC. If the donation exceeded $100, the gifter was rewarded with a custom pair of WSC socks.
Every person at WSC is affected by Giving Day in some way, shape or form. The donations go to many organizations and facilities all around campus, like the new Wildcat Dome, new field and many scholarships to a wide variety of students.
“Giving Day brings the campus together around a shared goal and helps fund important programs, facilities and opportunities for students,” WSC cheer captain Kinnley Kearns said. “It boosts school pride, strengthens community support and benefits groups like athletics, academics and student organizations.”
Giving Day gives students the opportunity to come to college and have help financially while doing it.
“As a member of the Wayne State cheer team, Giving Day helps funds a scholarship for us, which makes a difference by helping cover some of our expenses for school like books or a class,” Kearns said.
Giving Day is over, and the goal was met, but WSC hints at more donations coming in a little later. WSC Facebook posts said that 50 more donors are looking to donate to raise that $125,000 mark even higher.
Head Football coach Logan Masters emphasized the importance of Giving day.
“Giving Day opens us up to go after the best players in the region,” Masters said. “Scholarships allow us to be very competitive financially and athletically to keep the best students athletes in the region here at Wayne.”
