Vocab with Mel and Thad
April 8, 2015
Recently, we came across a BuzzFeed video that featuring 15 beautiful words, so we thought we should write about our 10 favorite words.
Some words Melissa liked from the video included effervescence, ephemeral, incandescence, epoch and luminescence. The only word Thad liked was ephemeral.
Since we both liked that word so much, we will begin our discussion with it.
1) Ephemeral. Lasting for a very short time. We like it because it rolls the tongue very nicely, like a fine wine.
2) Obliterate. To destroy utterly, or to wipe out. Who doesn’t like it when the syllables of a word break up your speech pattern like little sticks of dynamite?
3) Voyeur. A person who gets sexual pleasure from secretly watching other people have sex. The printed word looks as nice as it sounds. Too bad its definition isn’t so classy.
4) Flabbergast. To surprise someone greatly; be astonished. It’s common, but it provides good wholesome fun. We also like that it reminds us of “Flubber” and the late Robin Williams.
5) Requiem. Whether it’s a musical composition setting parts of a requiem for Mass or an act or token of remembrance, like a hymn, it evokes gothic imagery and elegant remembrances. Melissa also thinks it’s just pretty.
6) Zealot. A person who is fanatical and uncompromising in pursuit of their religious, political, or other ideals. It’s sharp and fast like the gameplay on the Halo map it describes. Or the loudmouth protesting in the game lobby.
7) Salacious. Treating sexual matters in an indecent way and typically conveying undue interest in or enjoyment of the subject. This word’s synonyms leave a dirty taste in our mouths, but since salacious doesn’t, it feels like we’re getting away with something.
8) Phlegm. The thick mucus secreted in the respiratory passages and discharged through the mouth. If salacious leaves a good taste behind, phlegm leaves the opposite. It’s just perfectly gross.
9) Dalliance. A casual romantic or sexual relationship. Maybe we’re just projecting our worldly desires onto this list, but we really like dalliance. It’s the innocent one-night stand of the English language.
10) Lilt . To sing or play in a light, tripping, or rhythmic manner. It’s a happy little word. In a time when people make lists of big words to impress you, lilt is just there to be honest. We also like it because we want to lilt.
