The WSC softball teams winning streak in Florida (7-0) was broken last Tuesday when playing away against University of Nebraska, Kearney, who split with the Wildcats in the non-conference doubleheader.

The first game came as a shock for the ‘Cats, who lost 12-3, giving up 16 hits and one error to finish the game.

WSC also had a multi-hit game with 10, but never took the chance to score the runners that were left on base.

Junior centerfielder Lexie Loos was 3 for 4 with an RBI, while sophomore Melanie Alyea went 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles and a RBI.

The second game on Tuesday was significantly better for WSC, with the Wildcats defeating UNK 13-7.

Sara Scheffert had a rough start, allowing four runs, three walks and three hits in the first inning.

The hitters for the ‘Cats came out strong, earning six runs in the second inning to regain the lead over the Lopers.

WSC continued to hit in the next couple of innings and ended the game with a total of 15 hits.

“Coming out and losing the first game was a shock to us,” senior Kelcie Bormann said. “We thought since we did well in Florida that we could take it easy and that is never a way we should be thinking.”

The Wildcats continued their week, traveling down to St. Joseph, Mo. to play in the Missouri Western tournament held over the weekend.

On Friday, the Wildcats split their two games, losing their first to the University of Central Missouri 5-1, giving up eight runs and only gaining seven runs themselves.

Sam O’Brien went 3 for 3 against UCM and was the only multi-hit player for the ‘Cats that game.

WSC bounced back to take a win against Missouri Southern State University 7-0 for the second game of the day.

Kelcie Bormann was the pitcher for the ‘Cats, only allowing two hits to MSSU, while also going 3 for 3 at the plate with two RBI’s.

Saturday was good day for WSC, who came out firing and taking home two wins for the day against Washburn University (4-3) and Northwest Missouri State University (4-1).

The high of winning both their games didn’t continue to the next day, however.

On Sunday, the ‘Cats lost their first game 7-1 against Missouri Western State University, who they had beat previously this year when they played them in the St. Cloud Dome Tournament.

The second game against Central Oklahoma University was no better, WSC having four errors and giving up seven hits to lose the game 7-2.

“We know what we did wrong, and it is something we will work on before we play again,” senior infielder Jordan King said.

Wayne State finished the weekend with a 14-6 overall record as they prepare for Northern Sun Conference play around the corner.

The Wildcats will play again on Wednesday in an away doubleheader against Augustana College.

Over the weekend, the Wildcats will host their first home doubleheader of the season, facing Minot State on Saturday and the University of Mary on Sunday.
