Whether it’s your first year in college or you’re a seasoned veteran, moving out can be a heavy task in the wake of final tests, projects and presentations.
On May 8, Wayne State College will be closing the residence halls to prepare for summer, with both classes and construction happening over the break. Students will need to clear out dorm rooms entirely before the end of the week.
All personal items will need to be removed, and students should leave only the furniture that the room came with, such as beds, desks and drawers.
When it comes to moving, everyone’s situation is different. Most students have family and friends who can help with the process, and there will be volunteers during the move-out days to assist. In the case that you might need to move out by yourself, there are multiple options for what you can do.
Create a plan for how you want to move out. How will everything fit in your car, or multiple cars? What needs to be taken down? What should you begin with first?
For those who live with a roommate, that timing is also something to be considered. If you move out before your roommate, you could ask for their help while you pack up.
It’s also important to note down any issues or problems with the room that are present. If a crack on the wall has appeared or particles are dropping from the ceiling, note the issue and report it to somebody, so the next person who moves into your room won’t have to report it.
All students should clean their room thouroughly before they leave. Clean the floor, wipe down the furniture, and look around the room to make sure everything is tidy.
Make sure that you return any college property before you leave. Your room key should be returned to staff by making an appointment with your RA. Any school property removed by a student will be added to that student’s account in the form of a charge or fee.
Personal items left behind in dorms will not be returned to their owners. On WSC’s Room Checkout Procedures page, they state; “Any student property that is left behind beyond the residency contract dates is subject to being considered abandoned by the student.”
While moving out can be a stressful process, there will be people to help as you empty your room, whether that be family, friends, or a volunteer helping during the move out days. While it’s a tiring process, it’s necessary to keep the dorms clean and ready for the next students.
Every residence hall has a different protocol for moving out, so make sure you are up to date with what is required when you leave your dorm for the summer. Each residence hall should have a board with check out information displayed in a communal area.
