Wrestling starts season off in N.D.

Wildcat wrestling was in action last Saturday at the Jimmie Open in Jamestown, North Dakota to begin their season. It was the Varsity opener for NAIA and NCAA Div. II teams and a mix of freshman and upperclassmen competed for the ’Cats.

Junior Gerald Kenkel led the way for Wayne State, as the Ogallala native finished 6th in the 174-pound weight class. Freshman Jordan Jensen of Lamars, Iowa competed in the 157-pound division for the Wildcats and finished the day with a 2-2 record for his first victories as a collegiate wrestler.

Freshman 285-pounder Angel Rojo from Schuyler earned a pin, as did transfer heavy weight Tyson Cisneros from Lincoln. Hunter Weiss, a 149-pounder from Beatrice, earned a win and senior captain Matthew Reeves was also a winner by pin at 141 pounds.

The Wildcat wrestlers will travel to Mitchell, South Dakota this Saturday to compete at the Dakota Wesleyan University Open.

Coach Greg Vander Weil encourages anybody who is interested in joining wrestling to contact him or visit the Rice Stage at 4:30 p.m. every weekday for practice.
