Home field advantage for Wayne State

The Wayne State softball team played their last home games this past weekend. WSC went 3-2 to improve their home record this season to 14-3.
The Wildcats have a record of 32-12 and 18-4, good for third in the NSIC.
The ‘Cats were led offensively over the weekend by Kelcie Bormann and Kaiti Williams. Bormann hit .462 and plated 7 RBI. Williams hit .400 and smashed 2 home runs.
The ace in the circle for WSC was Sara Scheffert, who went 3-1 with a 0.91 ERA and 21 strikeouts.
“Overall we are playing well,” coach Krista Wood said. “We had a heartbreaking loss in the first Minnesota State game.”
The Wildcats lost the first game against 12th-ranked Minnesota State when they stranded the tying run on second base and lost 3-2 on Friday.
Jordan King, Megan Hagemann and Williams each doubled to lead the ‘Cats offensively.
Scheffert received the pitching loss, allowing six hits and three runs (one earned) with six strikeouts and four walks.
The second game of the doubleheader against Minnesota State saw WSC get mercy ruled in five innings, 8-0.
Bormann was the losing pitcher after giving up five runs on six hits in two plus innings of work. Cassy Miller worked the final three innings and was charged with three runs on five hits.
The seniors for Wayne State finished their home careers as winners. WSC swept Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday 5-1 and 7-0.
In the first game, Melanie Alyea went 2 for 3 with a homer and 2 RBI to pace the ‘Cats offensively. Also contributing at the plate were King, who hit 2 for 3, Bormann, who was 2 for 4 with a double and run scored, and Hagemann, who homered.
Scheffert worked the first five innings to earn the pitching victory, allowing three hits and no runs with seven strikeouts and one walk.
Bormann tossed the final two innings and gave up one run on one hit with two strikeouts.
In the second game, the ‘Cats had a two woman-wrecking crew to lead the offense. Williams was 2 for 2 with 2 solo homers and Bormann belted a grand slam.
Scheffert earned another win in the circle throwing four innings, giving up three hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Bormann finished the final three innings, allowing just one hit with one walk and one strikeout.
“We are just going to keep playing our game,” Wood said. “Nothing changes with how we are going to approach the last four games of regular season.”
The Wildcats will cap off their regular season with two road doubleheaders. The ‘Cats will play the University of Mary on Saturday and Minot State on Sunday.
