O’ Brien carries hot bats of WSC softball

It was home sweet home for the Wildcats last week. WSC went a perfect 4-0 outscoring their opponents 41-10 over the weekend. WSC also split a doubleheader with 11-ranked Augustana last Wednesday.

Leading the charge at the plate was Sam O’Brien, who hit .556 and smacked three of the seven home runs for the ‘Cats. Other ‘Cats that contributed to the offensive onslaught were Kaiti Williams (.632 and five RBI), Jordan King (.462), and Kelcie Bormann (.412 and seven RBI).

WSC also excelled in the pitching circle. Sara Scheffert went 3-1 with a 1.84 ERA. Bormann went 2-0 with a spotless ERA of 0.00.

“Overall, we had a great week,” coach Krista Wood said. “We out-hit our opponents 62 to 32. We had 7 home runs and 10 doubles this past week and hit .416 as a team.”

WSC started the weekend off with a mercy rule victory over Northern State, 14-4.

Leading the ‘Cats at the plate was Kylee Simpson going three for three with a triple, three RBI and two runs scored. Bormann finished two for three with a home run and four RBI, while O’Brien was two for three with a homer and two runs scored.

Scheffert picked up the pitching win, giving up just one run on two hits with three strikeouts in four innings of work.

It was much of the same for the ‘Cats in the second game against Northern State. WSC earned another mercy rule victory by the same score, 14-4.

WSC was led offensively by Melanie Alyea, who went two for three with a solo homer and three RBI. Also contributing home runs were Simpson and O’Brien.

Bormann was the winning pitcher, giving up one run (unearned) on three hits with six strikeouts.

The ‘Cats earned a victory over MSU Moorhead in the first game of the doubleheader on Sunday, 8-2.

The ‘Cats were paced offensively by Williams, who went three for three with two doubles and two RBI.

Bormann went three for four with a double and two RBI and Melanie Alyea added two hits to contribute at the plate.

Scheffert earned the complete game win, allowing seven hits and two runs with six strikeouts and three walks.

WSC shutout MSU Moorhead, 5-0, to cap off a perfect weekend.

The ‘Cats offense was led by O’Brien, who went two for thee with a two-run homer. Williams also went two for two while Shelby Wobken added a pinch-hit homer.

Bormann raised her season record to 10-1 with the shutout win in the circle, allowing just six hits with eight strikeouts and one walk.

“Anytime you can play in front of your home crowd it is a good day,” Wood said. “Our team does a great job of fighting back if we happen to get behind in the game.”

The ‘Cats split a series with Augustana last Wednesday. WSC dropped the first game 1-0 and won the second game 2-1.

The Wayne State softball team returns to action Saturday and Sunday for two home doubleheaders. The ‘Cats will be taking on Minnesota Crookston on Saturday and Bemidji State on Sunday. Sunday will also be WSC Alumni Day.
