America is now weeks into a war that many citizens consider unnecessary, and recent claims from the president have heightened this anxiety.
On Easter Sunday, President Donald Trump posted on social media platform X, formally known as Twitter, demanding that Iran open the Strait of Hormuz.
“Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!! Open the F—–’ Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell – JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah. President DONALD J. TRUMP,” Trump posted.
Using animated language, including swear words, on a sacred Christian holiday, caused uproar on social media.
The very next day, Trump threatened to annihilate an entire civilization.
“A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will,” Trump posted.
Not only were these posts anxiety inducing, they also counted as war crimes. The Additional Protocol I of the Geneva Conventions prohibits “acts or threats of violence whose primary purpose is to terrorize civilians.”
Furthermore, the definition of genocide defines the mental element as “intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group, as such.”
Both qualifications are met in Trump’s posts.
“I am very disappointed in him as someone who has voted for him three times,” a Wayne State College student who chose to remain anonymous said. “His choice of words lately have been very scary.”
When I asked why previous heinous and evidence-based accusations against Trump were not the final straw, the student chose not to comment.
According to a poll from Pew Research Center, 61% of Americans do not approve of how Trump has handled the Iran conflict.
Trump also went on a tangent about the Pope, which is controversial considering the Pope has stood up for human rights and voiced concerns with groups like ICE.
Media outlets like the Daily Wire have been staunch supporters of Trump but had a hard time defending him after he posted an AI-generated image of himself as Jesus Christ.
I suppose that is all it took. Not Trump threatening an entire civilization, the inappropriate comments made about women including his own daughter or even the individuals he has associated with, including Jeffrey Epstein, it was a blasphemous picture of him as Jesus Christ that caused the Daily Wire to throw in the towel.
Many politicians, including those who endorsed Trump previously, have called him evil and demanded a cognitive test.
“I will not be voting for him in the next election, but I also refuse to vote Democrat,” the anonymous student said.
I reminded the student that Trump will not be eligible to run in the 2028 presidential election, as he will have served two full terms, but they had no comment.
These actions have raised questions about whether Trump’s presidency is for the people, or himself.
