Wayne State College’s International Club is hosting an international dinner on April 18 at 6 p.m. in the Frey Suite to showcase international food and bring the community together.
“It’s our main event for the year,” International Club Secretary Saynam Sood said. “It’s our biggest event and the one that we spend most of our resources on. It’s also one of the most inclusive, because everyone loves food.”
The event isn’t just a dinner: there will be trivia, games, a mocktail bar, dancing and the opportunity to get to learn about other cultures and the others in the community.
“Last year’s trivia had people running across Frey Suite,” International Club President Nicola Joseph said.
The dinner will consist of a fresh tossed garden salad with ranch or Italian dressing, halal chicken in either orange ginger sauce or sweet and sour sauce and vegetable fried rice with no egg.
“Halal is for a lot of people that are in the Muslim community,” International Club Advisor Elizabeth Heaton said. “We definitely took our time to acknowledge other people’s food recommendations and accommodations that they need. I know that we just finished Ramadan last month and that kind of opened up campus to be aware that there’s a lot of students that need halal chicken, or any meat.”
The dessert at the dinner will be Dutch baby pancakes served with Nutella, whipped cream, blueberries and strawberries. There will also be a build-your-own mocktail station to so everyone can get creative with making their own beverages.
“So, it’s going to be a lot easier this year,” Heaton said. “Fresh Ideas is catering the event and it’s been nice. They have been very understanding and have been accommodating to our plans for this dinner. So, it’s kind of exciting. The members really did take their time to meet with everybody and make sure that the combinations for food have been addressed.”
The event is open and free to all WSC students and is open to Wayne community members and members of other colleges.
“We definitely invited people that have opened up their arms to the international students,” Heaton said. “Some of the people in the office actually invited a lot of the community members that have helped other international students, even if it wasn’t directly towards them.”
WSC students interested in attending the event can go to the myWSC app and RSVP for the event and get a free luggage tag upon arrival.
“Everyone’s welcome,” Sood said. “I hope more people join and attend and have fun with everyone.”
