Morey residents got an email from residence life on Mar. 19 explaining that residents will not be able to live in Morey over the summer.
“Due to several significant construction projects scheduled to begin on Monday, May 11 2026, we will be unable to approve any housing extensions for Morey Hall residents beyond 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 10. 2026,” the email read.
Timothy Lechtenberg, the assistant director of residence life- area coordinator, said that Morey’s construction projects will deal with updating the plumbing systems.
“During the summer, Morey Hall will undergo plumbing upgrades, including the installation of new sinks and updated piping, This project will be completed in phases,” Lechtenberg said. “With approximately half of the building being completed this summer and the remaining portion scheduled for completion next summer.”
Lechtenberg also explained that over the summer, all residence halls but one close. If students were to stay over the summer, they would have to live in the designated hall that is open for the summer, which is Stearns Hall this year.
“All students living on campus during the academic year are required to move out at the end of the spring semester. Students who need to remain on campus for the summer—such as those enrolled in summer courses or employed by the college—may apply for summer housing. Approved students will be reassigned to the designated summer housing hall,” Lechtenberg said.
Riley Hansen, a resident of Morey Hall, is in the process of trying to get a job at Campus Security.
“The whole housing situation depends on whether I get a job at Campus Security. Right now, I am in the process of applying for the job, and if I get accepted, I will then apply for summer housing, which is due, I think, May 5th,” Hansen said. Hansen said they are happy that Morey is getting new plumbing, especially for new residents.
“The transition from home to college as a freshman is hard, and I know public bathrooms are definitely a new experience for those freshmen. The incoming freshman who moves into Morey won’t have to worry about having enough water pressure or standing in the shower for an extra 30 minutes trying to get the soap out of their hair because the pressure is bad. In all honesty, it’s about time Morey got new plumbing,” Hansen said.
