CatPAC will be hosting a free showing of “Sinners” at the Peterson Fine Arts Building on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. to celebrate Black History Month.
“Sinners” is a 2025 rated R film with a run time of two hours and seventeen minutes directed and written by Ryan Coogler who also directed movies like “Black Panter” and “Creed.” The movie includes actors Michael B. Jordan as Smoke and Stack, the main characters, Jack O’Connell as Remmick and Hailee Steinfeld as Mary.
According to IMDb, “Sinners” takes place in the Mississippi Delta during 1932. It is about two brothers who try returning to their home state to start over after being in Chicago, but they discover a great evil when they return home.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, “Sinners” is 97% fresh or positive on the tomatometer which is how critics rate movies. On the popcornmeter or the audiences ratings, “Sinners” was given 91% fresh and a 4.6 out of five stars.
CatPAC executive director Anja Oelofse looked to bring “Sinners” to WSC to celebrate Black History Month and learn something from the movie but also because of its success and 16 Academy Award nominations. These nominations included categories like Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for Micheal B. Jordan.
“’Sinners’ was an obvious choice for me when we decided to do a black history movie night,” Oelofse said. “Not only does it focus on black artists and bring interesting stories to life, it was one of the biggest pop culture events of last year. On top of all of that it is also electric, exciting and a really fun time at the movies.”
CatPAC events planner Mason Chamberlain looks to have the movie be more than just a free showing of “Sinners” but a place for people to learn something as well.
“The goal for the event is to have people enjoy the movie and hopefully learn something along the way,” Chamberlain said.
Chamberlain is excited to see the people who take time out of their day to see this free movie on campus.
“Everyone is welcome to join us for Sinners,” Chamberlain said. “It’s free and open to all students. I hope we see you there.”
Oelofse added that the showing of this movie is also a way to get more people to see the film on a big screen.
“Come, bring your friends and enjoy cinema the way it was meant to be watched,” Oelofse said.
