On Feb. 14, Wayne State College held a planetarium show featuring love songs and lasers that was open to all ages and attendees were also given a Valentine’s Day gift for watching.
The laser show followed a “Space Opera” and used various animations, line art, abstract shapes and colors. The laser show played different genres of music centered around love and couples.
“It was overall a pretty fun experience, but certain parts of the show did feel very home-made or unfinished,” attendee Kameron Randolph said. “The song choices were fun and interesting, with many types of music being explored.”
The show featured slower songs that were country and pop but also played upbeat hip hop and rock. The show was about 35 minutes, with around 10 songs on the setlist. Songs from Taylor Swift and the B-52’s were enjoyed the most by the planetarium crowd. A lot of the animations were simple, but very entertaining. Animation techniques such as rotoscoping were used as well, which made certain parts feel more realistic. The varying colors of each image were a good pop of color that flew across the dome. Some animations were reused several times in the single show, which took away a good bit of immersion. The beat of the song did not play with the animations, but rather slightly before or after the beat. I would recommend the planetarium to anyone who would want to go out without spending much money.
The Fred G. Dale Planetarium is located in the basement of the Carhart Science building, with regular shows every Friday and Saturday until May 2026. The events are free but have a recommended donation of $3 for every child and $5 for every adult.
Private shows and lessons can also be arranged for schools or families wanting to learn more. For any further questions or concerns, science-enjoyers can contact planetarium director, Dr. Todd Young at [email protected].
