Wildcat esports finished last semester on fire, bringing home several medals, awards and even player honors. This semester, Wayne State College starts their season cold as ice.
Wildcat esports finished the first two weeks of the season with a 2 – 7 record, with the only victories coming at the hands of Call of Duty and League of Legends. Call of Duty player Micheal Costlow had one thing to say following the loss during the opening week of the semester.
“It’s a fluke,” Costlow said.
WSC COD opened the season with a 3 – 1 loss, playing with Jayden Leuders, aka Swoopy, instead of their usual starter Ayden Veik, aka Blitz. Blitz was present for their rescheduled second and third matches of the season that took place Feb. 9, picking up 30 eliminations with only five deaths in hardpoint against fellow Nebraska rival University of Nebraska Omaha
Coach Mitch Keady, alumnus of WSC esports said he remained optimistic about the season.
“It’s the opening weeks of the semester, you know,” Keady said. “People are still getting situated in their dorms and there are a lot of games left to play.”
Week three is underway now, as Wildcat esports is finding the calm Keady referred to, bringing home several victories from rosters all over the board. As mentioned, WSC COD won two games, as well as a victory from both league games, Rocket League and League of Legends, pushing WSC closer to batting at .500.
Wildcat Valorant had a slow start to the season, following a first week loss 0 – 2. Rachvoll1979 aka Cash Vollersten refused to let the team lose back-to-back weeks though and ended up leading the comeback in week two and steamroll in week three.
“It was just a great game and Chamber diff to end it,” Cash said.
Diff-ing someone in a videogame refers to when someone plays the same character as another and the winner does much better than the loser. Wildcat Valorant looks forward to week 4, against ECPI who matches their 2 – 1 record.
WSC Overwatch is suffering a similar fate so far this season, without the happy ending of the Valorant team. The new kids on the block, the WSC Marvel Rivals team, have had a strong start to the semester.
Blades, aka Carlyle Young said, “It’s pretty good so far … our placements went well. We lost against the first team and won against the second team, but we ended up fighting the first team as our third and won against them.”
