As the new semester begins, students have been moving back all over campus. Residents of Stearns Hall, however, have had to face some electrical problems recently.
“It’s happened three times, but basically all the power in just our living room will go out,” Valery Quintana, a sophomore at Wayne State College, said. “It usually happens at night like when we’re watching TV or playing a game.”
Although these recent electrical issues may be frustrating, they are not surprising.
Last semester, students on the third floor had to go without air conditioning because they wouldn’t work properly. This was all during the hottest time of year on campus. Others face smaller problems, but electrical problems nonetheless.
“We got back at the beginning of the semester, and I noticed that the light in our bathroom was flickering,” Lelend Dilley, a junior at WSC, said. “We have one light in the shower area so it was very obvious when taking a shower that the light would go off.”
Due to these issues, students have been having to put in a maintenance request for the problem to be fixed.
“When the power went off we had to call Campus Security because they were the only ones with a key to the room to flip the breaker, and they told us they’d put in a maintenance request, but we still have not been visited by them,” Quintana said.
Quintana also said that when speaking to her RA about these issues, they had said that many students across the entire building were also facing similar problems, but then explained that we all share a power source, so technically speaking even though the outlets are there not all of them can be used.
Campus security had also recommended against the use high power electronics or power strips in the outlets to prevent power outages.
