Every year, the social studies department comes together and puts on a geography bowl where any student from any major is allowed to participate. This year was no exception.
Chairs filled quickly as they were handing out raffle tickets and a free soda. You were able to sit anywhere facing the front stage.
There were eight teams and the first to go were the Physical Geos and the Continental Drifters. This first round was a great start to the tournament. They were neck and neck throughout the match and ended up going into the Bonus Bet question, but the Physical Geos pulled away with the win.
“It was actually really entertaining,” Valery Quintana, a student in attendance, said. “I love how the crowd could be involved if neither team got the question right.”
The next three matches in the first round went smoothly leaving four teams left, the Physical Geos, Corn Cartel, Talking Bens and the Fish.
It was now time for the championship round and the crowd looked alive. The Corn Cartel and Fish were just moments away from facing off in the Championship round.
“It was super intense, like I have never felt anticipation like that in any sort of academic bowl in my life,” Quintana said. “If I were either team, I would have been so nervous.”
The Corn Cartel finished in first place, as well as winning the costume contest.
“I felt like the questions were a good mix of easy and also hard,” Quintana said. “I think any student could participate.”
The questions were very diverse in that some of them had pop culture mixed in them, or it was just straight up questions about geography. Still though, every team had a fair shot at winning the title.
