Wayne State College Wildcat volleyball continued their NSIC success as they hosted eight sets of volleyball in under 24 hours over the weekend and came out with two big wins.
The first match of the weekend was a top 20 matchup with the No. 14 Wildcats hosting the No. 16 undefeated Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. The ‘Cats struggled early in this match giving up a two–set lead to the Bulldogs, but they did not give up.
“A big mental goal for this weekend is to get ourselves out of any runs that the other team has,” sophomore setter Molly Romano said before the matches.
After set two the Wildcats took control of the match, winning set three 25–19, set four 27–25, and finished the reverse sweep with a 15–11 set five win.
“Reverse sweeping Minnesota Duluth at home was an awesome feeling,” said freshman Delaney Miller. “The crowd that was there was so rowdy and cheered us on every step of the way, so it was great to get not just a win for us but for them too. Minnesota Duluth was a great team, but I think after we made some adjustments on our end, it was a fun battle.”
The match was more than just winning but also included two career highs. The first was by sophomore Chloe Hanel who led the team and the match with 24 kills in addition to having five total blocks.
Romano also had a career high of 60 assists during the match. In addition to these career highs, junior Channatee Robles had all three of the teams’ service aces.
This success had to have a quick turnaround as the Wildcats came back the next day and hosted the Beavers from Bemidji State for their homecoming matchup.
The crowd and the Wildcats showed out for this match as the ‘Cats came out with a quick three–set sweep against the Beavers.
Miller continued her early success as she led the match with 12 kills while junior Laney Kathol led the team with seven blocks.
“Our goal for Bemidji was to make sure we were doing what we needed to be doing, especially coming off of high emotions in the previous game on Friday night,” sophomore Anna Borner said. “We know that every team coming into our gym wants to beat us, so taking care of business on our side of the net was our goal for the day on Saturday, and we accomplished that.”
WSC remains undefeated in the NSIC with a record of 5–0 and an overall record of 12–2 after their win on Tuesday, Sept. 30 against Briar Cliff. After this successful weekend the Wildcats jumped to number nine in the Sept. 29 AVCA/TARAFLEX Division II WVB Poll.
The ‘Cats will look to continue their success as they play Winona State on Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. and No. 11 Concordia–St. Paul on Oct. 4 at 5 p.m. on the road.
