Wayne State College is far from the first college to reuse another college’s fight song, but should they become original and create their own? I believe they should.
Being a Division II school in one of the biggest conferences, I believe WSC should be a bit more original with their fight song.
Even though they took the iconic song “On Wisconsin” and made it their own by spelling out
Wayne State I still believe that they should make a song that is original to the school.
In my opinion I think having originality in something like a fight song will bring so much tradition and history to the school. It will make alumni remember the spirit and tradition WSC has to offer.
This reasoning is different when applied to high school. Many high schools use college fight songs as their own, and I believe that is understandable.
There are so many high schools across the United States, and the larger world that it would be hard to make new and different fight songs for every school.
My high school for example, Xavier College Preparatory in Phoenix, Arizona used The University of Notre Dame’s fourth song.
This decision was fitting considering that both schools are Catholic and Notre Dame was a huge school in the college admissions process of my high school.
Additionally, most high schools don’t compete at the national level like WSC does. Combining these reasons, I think WSC using a fight song from another college isn’t bad, but I believe we need to establish originality for our school.
