Wayne State College used a late run to get the win against Concordia- St. Paul last Friday night in Rice Auditorium.

Sophomore guard Matt Thomas put in a game high 27-point effort to lead the Wildcats to an 84-76 victory. The game started out back and forth with both teams making big runs to take early leads.

WSC used one of those runs to tie the game at 19 with 6:51 left in the half. CU countered the Wildcat run with one of their own by scoring the next 9 out of 11 points to take the largest lead of the first half at 7 with 4:21 to go. Wayne State closed the half strong taking a 32-31 lead into the half.

Thomas got things going in the second half for the ‘Cats, scoring a three point play to fire up the crowd. Concordia did what they did all night going on a 12-2 run to go up six. With 13 minutes to go in the game, WSC scored nine straight points, capped off by a Thomas jumper, as the team tried to take control of the game. For the next five minutes, the ‘Cats would.

The Golden Bears again went on a run to hold a four-point advantage over the ‘Cats. WSC rallied to take the lead for good. Down 61-59, with just over six to play, Thomas and junior Joel Heesch scored the next 10 points. CU got as close as 73-70, but WSC held on for the eight-point win.

Things did not go as well for WSC against Minnesota State-Mankato on Saturday. The Wildcats went over eight minutes in the second half without scoring to help the Mavericks to a 76-59 victory.

Wayne State came out hot to start the game, shooting 64 percent from the field. WSC held the game close but were never able to get any closer than one point. The Mavericks pushed their lead to 37-33 at the half.

WSC went scoreless for most of the second half, digging them too far into a hole.

Thomas led the ‘Cats in scoring for the second game in a row, followed closely by sophomore Adam Moon with 10.

The Wildcats will be on the road next week taking on Minnesota Crookston Friday night at 8 p.m.
