Don’t answer the door for ‘Babadook’

Many people today say that Hollywood is uncreative and that there are no new stories to be told.

One genre that seems to be having more trouble than the rest is horror. It’s rare that I see a unique idea brought to scary films anymore, and most new ideas that squeak by tend to be not so great.

Recently, horror movies have started to multiply and show different terrifying tales that people seem to enjoy, even rave about. A good example of this would be “The Babadook.” But is “The Babadook” really fantastic or is this another example of another horror film shakily put together?

“The Babadook” is about a widowed woman whose husband died in a car accident while he was taking her to the hospital to give birth. It is some years later and she is the sole caretaker for her six year-old son, Sam.

One night the family reads a bed time story about a monster that knocks on your door and kills children. Shortly after reading, the mother and son begin to experience supernatural events caused by a monster attempting to take Sam.

Almost everyone I talk to that has seen “The Babadook” raves about how amazing and scary it is, so I was super excited to sit down and watch it.

I was ready be terrified, but the only emotion I felt towards this movie was boredom and a great loathing.

The biggest gripe I had over this film was the acting talent of the family. The mother just seemed whiny and overall forgettable. Maybe I felt that way about her character because I was focusing all my disgust and hatred towards the character of Sam.

Sam is the worst character I have seen written for a long time. Right from the beginning of the movie the kid is always screaming and throwing tantrums. He does not seem to have friends, and I can see why. I would even go as far as to say that he was the reason why I hated this movie so much.

It was like I was watching a full length movie about a child throwing a fit in the grocery store because his mom would not get him candy, or in this case, a monster was trying to eat him.

Don’t worry Mr. Babadook, I would have wanted to eat him too.

The writing was severely lacking as well. I understand that the director was trying to signify that the mother was alone and had no one to turn to. But, most of her problems were because of her child. I am not saying that she should have just gotten rid of the kid or that single parenting is easy, but this kid did not react like a normal kid.

The ending was a giant flop as well. I can’t really talk much about this part of the film without giving the ending away, but I have to say it made no sense. There was no reason whatsoever to end the film like that.

Retrospectively though, it was the perfect ending to this double flusher of a horrible film.

I do not understand why this movie has gotten so many great reviews and is loved by so many. The writing is clunky, the ending is puzzling and the characters need to be locked away so I never see them in another film again.

So if someone comes and knocks on your door three times to watch the film “The Babadook,” for your sake and well-being, don’t let them in.
