WSC wrestling places 2nd in opening dual

Wayne State College’s wrestling club competed with the likes of clubs from Iowa and Iowa State last Friday night in the team’s first dual of the year.

Although there were huge size differences in the schools, the Wildcats still were competitive with some of the biggest club teams in the nation, placing second at the dual.

Wrestling Coach Greg Vander Weil thought his team had taken first in the dual, until looking back at the score book only to find there was a mistake made that gave Iowa State the first-place finish.

“I was a little bummed out when I went back and checked the book. But getting second and only losing to Iowa State by six isn’t bad for the first meet of the year,” Vander Weil said.

Returning letter winner Devin Rupp had an impressive day, winning both of his matches. He beat his first opponent from Colorado State University 5-3 in overtime, and would go on to win 7-3 over an Iowa State wrestler.

On Saturday, the same teams met again for a round-robin individual tournament. Paxton Sternberg, Matthew Reeves and Caleb Thomas took first place in the 125-133, 141 and 165 lb. weight class.

Jacob Vogel helped WSC by placing second in the 141 lb. weight class.

WSC will be in action again Thursday, traveling to Sioux City for a dual at Morningside and will continue the busy week traveling to Fort Collins, Colo. on Saturday.
