Wrestling season is right around the corner. Wayne State wrestling club went to nationals ranked seventh last year. They will look to improve this year.

Returning senior and All-American Matthew DeGarmo will be a big part of what WSC wrestling can do this year.

“I didn’t even realize I was the only senior in here. We really don’t like to put labels on anything we are all just as important as the next guy,” DeGarmo said.

After being only one match away from being named an All-American, Devin Rupp will look to improve this year, hopeful to gain the All-American title.

“It was heartbreaking losing that close to moving on, but it has given me a reason to try harder to become an All-American,” Rupp said.

The Wildcats are gaining a new assistant coach this year, Jon Williams, who is a current record holder for wrestling here at WSC.

“It is great having Jon help coach this year. He used up all of his eligibility, but still has a semester here. He can really help our freshmen grow as wrestlers,” head wrestling coach Greg Vander Weil said.

Wayne has a talented group of freshmen coming into the program. The top four finishers at last year’s Nebraska State Tournament have made their way to WSC.

“We have kids that see the success we have on a national level and want to be a part of it. Success breeds success,” coach Aaron Schuett said.

WSC starts their season this weekend on Friday and Saturday at the Wayne Elementary School.
