Finding help with addiction

Taylor Clark, Staff Writer

Realizing you have a problem is the first step. Reaching out for help is the second and possibly the hardest step in an addict’s road to betterment.

In a substance abuse recovery workshop a person has the chance to reach out to someone that will help take on any problem dealing with this abuse.

“We’re happy to set up appointments in dealing with substance abuse. Students are welcome to call or stop by our office as well,” licensed mental health practitioner (LMHP) Lin Brummels, a counselor on campus, said.

Counselors are located in room 103 of the Kanter Student Center for students struggling with addiction.

Substance abuse consisting of alcohol or drugs is not an uncommon thing in college students. Many don’t seek out needed help, which can lead to bigger troubles down the road.

The most common reason for substance abuse is due to an event in a person’s life that was traumatic and has likely caused them to turn to substance abuse in to self medication.

Addiction can often be hard for those close to the addict to understand.

“Once a month there are workshops with counselors to come in and talk in groups. Counselors and students can also check the WSC site and find out the meeting dates,” Brummels said.

Participants in these groups discuss some recent developments in addiction theory and research.

The group also examines issues in assessing substance abuse in college students and problems specific to substance abuse recovery with college students.

The workshops with the counselors help improve the sessions in a way students can relate.

The counseling center is available for students at (402)375-7321 to set up an appointment. Walk-ins are also welcome. Office hours are from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Help and assistance is also available for friends and loved ones of students struggling with addiction.

AA (alcohol anonymous) and Al-Anon is also available through the counseling center and in the community.
