Saturday provided the Wildcats’ first home rugby match, and Wayne State College did not disappoint.

Both the men and women won their games.

Players started arriving around 9:30 a.m. to get the tournament organized didn’t leave until around 6:45 p.m. By the time games started, the weather was perfect and the fields were set.

“Games went well, smooth and we are starting to work out the rusty spots. Both women and men were up against hard competition and it has improved our game just in a week,” rugby coach Darrin Barner said.

The women continue to dominate the field, overpowering the Great Plain All Stars 55-0. The Wildcat women seem to be on a roll as they keep their number-one ranking and remain undefeated.

The men also won their match, beating the Nebraska Cornhuskers 12-10. Both teams seemed closely matched but WSC, ranked number five in the nation, got the edge on a Division I school.

“I thought it went very well for the first home tournament. We were very organized in all aspects, from the players to the coaching, to the administrative work,” WSC rugby player Jason Ramsey said.

WSC rugby will host another home game this Saturday against the University of South Dakota. The women’s game will be at 2 p.m. and the men’s game will follow at 4 p.m. Both games will be played at “The House of Pain” in Wayne, located in the Wayne Rugby Park two blocks south of McDonalds.
