Former NCAA Div. I soccer coach Bruce Erickson has become the head coach at Wayne State College.

Erickson comes to Wayne State from Creighton University in Omaha. In his 16 years at Creighton, Erickson built an impressive resume. During his tenure he led the Bluejays to 163 victories and made five NCAA Tournament appearances, holding three of the four longest winning streaks in school history.

In 2002 and 2010, Erickson was honored as Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year.

Erickson’s success extends farther than just the pitch: he has coached 26 first-team scholar athletes.

He knew it was time for the opportunity to build the program at Wayne State.

“I love the changes the Athletic Director is making here at Wayne State for the soccer program. This facility is amazing,” Erickson said. “Coming from Creighton, who has one of the best soccer facilities in the country, it is great to come here and have a very nice facility as well. I believe we will have a lot of success in trying to build up the program here.”

Wayne State held a 3-14-1 record and a 2-13 record in conference play during the 2014 season.

“We have a ton of talent here and I know we can do good things. My goals for the team are to get better every day. Obviously we want the victories, but I am really looking to see improvement from game to game,” Erickson said.

The Wildcats have looked good coming into the season. During the preseason Wayne State beat Concordia University-Nebraska 2-0. The season home opener will be Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Wayne State soccer complex.
