Hidden in the southeast corner of Conn Library resides a cold, empty stairwell in desperate need of some tender loving care. Luckily enough, with the new library renovations soon taking place, the southeast library stairwell will also undergo a little Extreme Makeover Home Edition–in the form of inspirational quotes.
“The idea for the quotes came from lead architect, Eileen Korth, a team member from the Jackson & Jackson Associates firm.” Dave Graber, Director of Conn Library, said. “She had seen examples on buildings where they brought in certain elements to a dull space and turned it into something visually attractive.”
The WSC library committee held a Nebraska quote contest in which students and faculty could submit quotes by famous native Nebraskans. About 75 quotes were submitted and the committee has narrowed it down to about 15 quotes that will be displayed on the stairwell.
“So much of our culture originates from the east or west. The east is centered on New York and Washington D.C., while the west has Hollywood influences.” Graber said. “These quotes will bring cultural awareness of Nebraskans. It’ll show all the big names from this state and what they went on to achieve.”
Jay Collier, Director of College Relations, submitted a quote from writer and WSC graduate, John G. Neihardt. A quote that was selected as a finalist and will be seen for years to come.
“Neihardt is one of our most well known graduates, in fact a literary king in many regards.” Collier said.
“In his writings, he expressed fond memories about attending this school. The quote I submitted was a great reflection on the value of education.”
Other entries included quotes by Ponca Chief White Eagle, Malcolm X, Warren Buffett, Willa Cather and many more.
“A quote by a famous Nebraskan would bring a unique touch to our new building,” Elise Hepworth, associate professor of voice and music, said. “It’ll provide an opportunity to share wisdom and knowledge to those passing through these halls.”
