Walk-off Wildcats
Baseball wins three of four over weekend
April 29, 2015
It was an exciting four-game series with Upper Iowa for WSC.
Quinn McGill hit a walk-off single to secure the win in the first game for WSC in a 4-3 victory. Alex Kreft then hit a walk-off home run in game two, to give the Wildcats another 4-3 victory over the Peacocks.
Junior starting pitcher Eric Browning pitched a complete game, striking out 10 batters.
WSC had bases loaded in the seventh inning when Nick McIntee hit a sacrifice fly to even the score at 3-3. Curtis Bussard was up to bat next but didn’t get the opportunity to hit in the game-winning run due to an intentional walk. After the walk, McGill came through with a single to center field to win the game for the Wildcats.
In the second game the Wildcats found themselves down 3-0 in the sixth inning, but in the bottom of the inning John Roberts hit a two-run RBI double. Soon after, Michael Herman hit a RBI double to tie the game at 3-3.
WSC went on to win the game in the bottom of the ninth inning due to a Kreft bomb to left field.
“I’ve always been a guy to get a base hit or walk in that situation, so hitting a walk off was out of this world,” Kreft said.
Dylan McGill pitched for the Wildcats in game three, allowing two hits, one walk and 11 strikeouts in a 4-1 WSC win.
“I was able to get ahead early in the count which helps, and Kevin Anderson did a great job behind the plate along with the rest of the defense,” McGill said.
The last game of the series was WSC’s only loss, a 7-4 win for Upper Iowa. The Peacocks got off to a fast start scoring seven runs in the first three innings.
Both teams ended the game with 13 hits. Johnson went a perfect 4-4 from the plate, while Bussard went 3-5, extending his hitting streak to 15 straight games.
The Wildcats are now 23-20 on the year, and 18-12 in NSIC play.
Wayne State will have their final home games today, hosting third-ranked Minnesota State. The doubleheader will be held at 1:30 p.m.
