Going green before you leave

As students prepare to move out of the dorms, the Wayne Green Team will ensure it is done the “green” way.

For the second year in a row, the City of Wayne Green Team, along with Wayne State College, is sponsoring a “Green Move Out” from the dorms May 6-8.

“Our goal is to reduce the amount of reusable items in the landfills and to put these items back out into the community,” Sandy Brown, chair of the Wayne Green Team, said. “There’s no such thing as waste, just wasted resources.”

The items that are given back to the community allow people to buy these goods that are in perfect condition at a lower price.

There will be volunteers from the newly founded WSC Green Team, and the WSC football team, sitting at the dorm dumpsters to encourage and help students to donate their usable items instead of throwing them into the landfill.

Last year, two full storage units of reusable goods and five bags of clothing were collected. These items were sold at Rustic Treasures or donated to Micah’s Closet. Both businesses will be participating this year as well.

The Green Team raised $400 last year, but Brown said that is not the group’s goal. She said they encourage students to create their own account to sell their items at Rustic Treasures, but many are too busy.

Brown hopes there will be an increase in the amount of goods recycled this year.

“Now that people know we are there, they may have been saving stuff for us,” Brown said.

Also, if students have extra boxed or canned food, those items will be collected to be donated to the WSC Food Pantry or the Wayne Food Pantry.

The volunteers will be posted by the dumpsters on Wednesday, May 6, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursday, May 7, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Friday, May 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Wayne Green Team has been working to build a Zero Waste Community in Wayne with the support of WasteCap Nebraska for several years.
