More printing stations, no-class dead week initiatives lead agenda at first meeting

The start of the new semester has brought about new initiatives by the Student Senate: printing stations, dead week and designated smoking areas.

“Some of the initiatives have been started with preliminary meetings, but it is an ongoing process,” President of Student Senate Alyssa Bish said.

The senate is in the process of scheduling meetings with different leaders on campus to discuss the initiatives.

In the meetings, they hope to discuss the possibility of putting printing stations in residence halls or even in the Student Center. This will make printing more accessible and convenient.

“It would be easier not to have to walk everywhere and not as chaotic with everyone having to print,” WSC freshman Abbie Peterson said.

The senate is also looking into the academic policy of dead week.

“Bigger institutions have an actual week of no classes for students to study, and we would like to see if that is a possibility for Wayne State College students,” Bish said.

“I think that would a good idea. We could have a few days of relaxation, a few days to gather our thoughts and study,” WSC sophomore Jacob Mausbach said.

The last initiative the Student Senate is currently looking at concerns about smoking. The senate is looking into finding a convenient smoking area for students.

The senate is looking at providing a sheltered place for smokers to smoke without non-smoker students having to suffer from second-hand smoke, according to Bish.

The Student Senate believes all these initiatives will benefit the students.

“The Student Senate wants to best represent the voices of the students, and so we have tried to gather feedback through surveys and senator/student interaction,” Bish said. “We encourage feedback from students, and we will make every effort to make sure each voice is heard and a beneficial solution is met.”
