WSC’s Green Team has initiated its virtual Earth Month Bingo for students to participate in through the month of April.
Starting at the beginning of the month and ending on April 29, students can download a virtual Bingo card and do various tasks found on the card in order to achieve a bingo. These tasks engage students in thinking and becoming more eco-friendly, ranging from easy, such as filling a reusable water bottle, to more difficult and time-consuming, like making an eco brick.
The Green Team has been around for 11 years, having been established in 2015. These students promote and advocate for environmental sustainability on campus. Having hosted a plant social earlier in the year, these students want the campus to appreciate both the nature aspect and also reducing waste within the campus.
With the idea of reducing waste and being more eco-friendly, the inspiration for the bingo card started as a simple email.
“The Wayne State Green team did this last year with the recycling initiatives in the city of Wayne,” said Xavier Peardon, President of WSC Green Team. “Their chair, Sandy Brown, emailed me and brought the idea of doing a bingo. It’s sort of a collaboration in a way, we have some events from the Wayne Green Team that students can do to fill in a box, such as their movie Microplastics Madness.”
These tasks on the bingo card are just a pinch of sand in the world of waste. According to Development Aid, as of April 15, 2025, the United States is the number one country with the highest volume of waste generated, averaging about 265.2 million metric tons of waste.
In the recycling aspect of it, as of 2022, the United States is ranked 36th out of 38, in comparison to Japan, which is number one.
The spaces on the Bingo card provide students to be active and encourage them learn more about what they can do for their environment
“We want students to realize that we have options on campus for recycling and other sustainability initiatives, and not just on campus but also in the wider community of Wayne,” Peardon said.
Overall, the WSC Green Team is actively promoting local awareness and action in a fun and engaging way.
“We want everyone to participate in this, it’s fun, and we have a good prize for students to try and win, and we want students to learn more about sustainability,” Addie Stirek, Vice President of WSC Green Team, said.
Students who want to participate and have a chance at winning the prize can download the Earth Month Bingo Card available on the Wayne State College website or contact the WSC Green Team for more information at [email protected].
