The Wayne State College volleyball team will travel on Apr. 10 to CHI Health Center in Omaha, Nebraska to face state rival, University of Nebraska-Kearney Lopers, right before the Major League Volleyball team, Omaha Supernovas take on the Grand Rapids Rise.
But for new Wildcat middle blocker Mia Berg, who transferred in from Kearney, said that it’s going to feel weird seeing her old team.
“Yeah, it’s definitely a weird mindset for me just because it’s like playing my old friends and teammates that I was just with in December, but I’m excited to see everyone and we’re both just such good programs,” Berg said. “It’s going to be a good game either way. I mean, hopefully it falls in Wayne’s direction, but it’ll be a battle.”
Berg recorded a hitting percentage of .310 and had 1.80 kills, and 0.75 blocks per set last season with the Lopers. She mentioned that playing in CHI Health Center is big for division two volleyball.
“Yeah, it’ll be really cool. I think it’s a great way that the Supernovas can get fans also and just present or promoting D2 volleyball because it’s such a big deal, especially here in Nebraska,” Berg said. “It’ll be a cool experience for everyone, and I think it’ll be fun to play in front of that many people.”
WSC libero Anna Borner said that this game will be really great just based on how both teams last year were each ranked in the top five of division two volleyball.
“I think that we’re definitely pretty confident just because we have a lot of people returning and a couple good new adds,” Borner said. “So, yeah, we’re just excited to kick some butt.”
Borner, who will be playing in her first spring exhibition on court volleyball game for WSC, is going into her third year as a part of the Wildcat volleyball squad. She remarked on how important it is to have this game in front of Supernovas fans.
“Oh, I think that’s going to be super cool,” Borner said. “We don’t normally obviously get to play those big arenas and so and having the fans of the Omaha Supernovas. I think it’s just going to be a great day for volleyball in Nebraska.”
The Cats will take the court at 5 p.m. with doors opening at 4 p.m. for all fans to enter.
