Wayne State College club wrestling participated in the National College Wrestling Association Southwest Conference Championship that took place on March 14 at the newly renamed Rice Arena in Wayne.
The participating schools in the SWC were Kansas State, Louisiana State, Louisiana Tech, McNeese State, Sam Houston State, Tarleton State, Texas A&M University, Texas State University, University of Houston, University of Houston-Downtown, North Texas, Incarnate Word, University of Texas, and Xavier University of Louisiana.
WSC’s last time wrestling was on Feb. 14 in the NCWA men’s national duels in St. George, Utah at Utah Tech, where they finished with a 3-4 record and finished sixth. The first weight that a WSC wrestler competed in was 125 with Colter Sinn. He wrestled three times and was pinned in all three and finished sixth.
There were no wrestlers for WSC at 133 or 141, but there were two wrestlers at 149. Caleb Berg and Lige Reed were the two participating wrestlers.
Caleb Berg went 3-1 with his wins coming in a 11-4 decision over Incarnate Word’s Scott Kilian, a 12-3 major decision over Rylan Woodward of Texas A&M and a win over WSC teammate Lige Reed with a 10-4 decision victory. Berg’s loss came by pin against Anthony Dicks of Tarleton State, he finished second.
Lige Reed went 1-3 with his win being a forfeit. His losses were a tech fall against Louisiana Tech’s Samuel Favaza by tech fall, a 13-3 decision loss against McNeese State Christian Satchell and a previously mentioned 10-4 loss to Caleb Berg, where he finished eigth on the day.
WSC had two wrestlers at 165, Chase Eggleston, who is currently ranked 30th and Zach Foley. Chase Eggleston went 3-1 with his wins being over Lelan Hernandez of Houston-Downtown by pin, a 17-0 tech fall over Jeremiah Dugar of Texas State and a 15-0 Tech Fall over WSC teammate Zach Foley. Eggleston’s one loss came by pin against Tarleton States Finn Shepard; Eggleston finished 3rd.
Zach Foley went 1-2 with his win coming by forfeit and his losses first coming against Hollister Shoalmire of Louisiana Tech by Tech fall and the previously mentioned Tech Fall loss versus Eggleston, he finished 7th. In 174, Chance Sjulin went 3-1 with two wins over Carson Safranski of Kansas State by pin and a 7-3 decision victory. Sjulin’s third win came against Alexavier Warner of Sam Houston State by pin. Sjulin’s one loss came against Zeke Liescheski of Tarleton State by pin and Sjulin finished 3rd.
Brodie Lane, currently ranked third wrestler in the NCWA, wrestled at 235 for WSC and went 2-1. Lane won against Lance Tyler of Tarleton State by pin and Dwight Wheaton of North Texas by pin. Lanes one loss came against currently ranked 15th James Baldwin of Louisiana State by a 16-8 major decision and Lane finished 2nd.
At 285 WSC had two wrestlers competing. They were currently ranked 29th Tristin Grim and Jacob Henery. Tristin Grim went 1-1 with his win coming against Francisco Juarez of Houston by pin and his loss came against currently ranked ninth Jackson Phillips of Tarleton State by pin, Grim finished 3rd. Henery’s wins and losses were the same as Tristin Grim with a win by pin against Juarez and a pin loss against Philips, Henery finished 2nd.
Overall, the WSC team went 15-14 with an average finish of 4th place and qualified eight wrestlers for the 2026 NCWA National Wrestling Championships in the 14,000 seat Brookshire Grocery Arena in Bossier City, Louisiana.
