On the morning of Mar. 15, a rainstorm quickly turned into a winter storm, causing snow to leak into the newly installed air conditioner units in Morey Hall and Anderson Hall.
Travis Meyer, the assistant director of Energy and Utilities here at Wayne State College, said that this is not the first time weather has interfered with the AC units.
“Window AC units do not seal perfectly like your actual window does when it is closed… In the past, we have had snow come in when driven by 50 mph winds,” Meyer said. “Snow, being fluffy, has a tendency to actually go up with the drafts and find the little openings.”
Over spring break, 13 WSC employees installed 201 AC units in the dorms. Of those AC units, there were only 3 maintenance requests filed.
Payton Smith is a resident in Morey Hall. Smith came back on the Saturday before the storm hit Wayne. As the weather progressed, Smith saw snow coming from her AC unit.
“When I had my AC unit on when the storm was going, it had snow blowing through it and icicles forming on the inside of it,” Smith said.
Even though Smith had this issue, she didn’t put in a maintenance request to fix it. Smith just turned off her AC unit and went about her night.
“I didn’t put in a maintenance request because I didn’t think it would be a further issue,” Smith said.
Not all students had this problem. Riley Hansen and Hannah Strizek are roommates that also live in Morey Hall.
“I didn’t realize others had issues with their AC units. This is the first time I am hearing about this,” Hansen said.
Hansen and Strizek did have their AC unit on during parts of the storm, but never had any issues with snow blowing in through their AC units, although they did notice that when they shut off the AC Unit, it still let cold wind into their dorm.
“I think if they hadn’t just used tape to install the unit, it would decrease the amount of cold air in the room,” Hansen said.
