On Thursday, Feb. 12 Wayne State College hosted “An Evening of Choirs” which was a special showcase for audience members to hear what WSC singers had to offer. The event was at 7:30 p.m. in Ley Theatre and had a wide range of genres.
There were many choirs that attended and sang for the audience, each one unique and distinct. Some choirs have more demanding practices, while others not so much. There was a choir that was student led, which is not very common but was a very welcome addition according to the audience. Not only were these performances stunning but also connected.
“The performances were impressive, much more than high school choirs,” audience member Elijah Gahan said. “I liked the specific groups, the ranges and variety of songs. The concert was set around “a voice of singing.” It was like a mini story and they made you feel connected.”
While this performance was outstanding, there were a few things that some audience members would like to see in the future. Even though these are just minor suggestions about what could be down the line, they could be more engaging and cumulative for the audience and choir.
“Give more songs to the other choirs, because I would love to hear another from chamber,” audience member Lael Rathbun said.
WSC is full of opportunities for students to express themselves. The Fine Arts wing is an extremely diverse section that extends brilliant instructors and facilities to any who are interested or dedicated.
“I liked the chamber choir, but I also liked the new group, AURAE VOCES, I liked how it was student led and there was a lot of creativity,” Rathbun said.
The audience loved how it was run, and how the voices of the students blended together.
“I think the performances were very well done, they have very distant styles and you could tell that each choir had a specific goal in mind and they met it,” Rathbun said. “Their voices are distinct and they meshed well, that was not a problem.”
