Voting opens this week for the new president and vice president of the Wayne State College Student Senate. The candidates in this current race are Bianca Branco and Simeon Weers for president, with Julya Metchke and Robynne McMaster as their respective running mates. The candidates have some final things to say before the votes are cast.
“I really want to give all these unique voices a place to share their experiences and their voices,” Branco said.
Branco emphasized that her and Metchke’s plan is to help give voices to the students of WSC. Branco also said that students should feel welcome to approach her with any concerns.
Metchke agreed on their campaign goal, and she also said they want to “bridge the gap” between senate and the student body.
“I think the main thing I want to learn is just more about the students and their opinions,” Metchke said. “Like last night at the issues forum through the questions, we got to hear some of the student concerns and opinions, and I think that’s really valuable feedback.”
McMaster and Weers also have their campaign that wants to help better the student senate and campus. The running mates have come up with their plan to help improve campus with a “strong senate.”
“I love Wayne State College, and want it to be the absolute best it can be,” Weers said. “By engaging with the student body, following through on the initiatives we’ve laid out in our platform, and by regularly seeking student feedback we’ll be able to measure and evaluate the progress we’ve made, and make consistent improvement.”
“I have found that my experience on Senate has been… overarchingly quite life changing. And it’s really given me an in-depth perspective of where allocations go,” McMaster said. “And I believe that the best way to see change is to make it yourself. As you’ve heard in our campaign, Simeon and I are really passionate about that.”
Voting for the election of these candidates is open from Feb. 17-20. Resources to check out more about the candidates are in the student center and online.
