College can be a very difficult time in a student’s life. The balance of school work, part time jobs and activities can all weigh into a student’s mental and physical health. Wayne State College offers a Student Health and Counseling program to help students that are in need of help and balance. This year WSC’s Student Health and Counseling center has limited the number of appointments students can have throughout the entire school year. In years prior, students had unlimited appointment visits, while this year students are limited to 12 total appointments for the entire school year. This raised concerns among students.
Ally Drahota and Katryst Chari are both students who have had many experiences going to student health.
“With only twelve appointments a year, it sounds like they just need more resources,” Drahota said. “I understand they want to get more students in but you know, life is life and you never know when you’re going to get sick or see a counselor.”
“It’s ridiculous,” Chari said. “I can understand the concept because it’s this whole idea of fitting more students in and reaching out to more people, but you can’t make that decision based on all students. I would say it should be more down to the therapist themselves because they are the ones themselves who know who needs more sessions and who doesn’t.”
Both Drahota and Chari said they believe that students should have the ability to schedule as many appointments as they need to.
“Not everyone has the ability to drive somewhere else, like some people aren’t from around the area, so it’ll just be more convenient for them,” Drahota said.
Both Drahota and Chari have had great experiences with student health and hope it continues to be great for other students that are in need of the extra help on campus. Both Drahota and Chari have part time jobs outside of their classes and have both said that student health has been a great resource throughout the past years.
