On Nov. 21, the Esports team for WSC will be leaving to go to Kato Clash, a tournament hosted at Minnesota State University.
“I think we have some really strong teams going in,” Mitchell Keady, coach for the Wayne State College Esports team, said. “Smash [Bros] actually got their first exposure at a local event just this last Saturday [Nov 15]. A lot of these students I’ve seen from when they’ve joined the program when I was a senior, and now I get to be back and be their coach. I think we’re poised to do really, really well here at Kato Clash. As for our Rocket League team, I have no doubt we’re gonna make a splash and can’t wait to see how that goes.”
The competition will be on Nov. 22, in which Rocket League Varsity and Super Smash Bros Ultimate Varsity are going to compete.
“Michael [Rice] will be joining our varsity smash team as our sub as well; we aren’t foreseeing anyone being sick or not being able to go.” Keady said. “Also, getting J.V. players some varsity experience at a bigger event is always fun.”
Rocket League will consist of three players, and Smash Bros will have four from their varsity roster, and a substitute from their junior varsity joining as well.
“We’re coming in as the sixth seed,” Gabriel Dilley, captain of the Rocket League team, said. “Once we’re there, I’m sure we’ll take it pretty seriously. I think it will be great experience for our two newer people on varsity for their first LAN [Local Area Network] experience. It will be a little bit smaller, maybe not as stressful for them, maybe be able to take some games away and come away with a top four.”
The LAN is a great opportunity for the teams to get experience and to have fun and new experiences.
“We’ve already played all the teams at the LAN tournament, kinda know how good they are, who’s good on what team, stuff like that.” Dilley said. “So, the goal right now is kinda to just get our chemistry down, have some fun with it. It’s their first LAN, I hope it’s memorable. We’re gonna go down the day before, so actually enjoy the night, wake up, and get ready to play the video game all day.”
“I’m feeling pretty confident.” Trey McQuay, captain of the Varsity Super Smash Bros Ultimate team, said. “We played the one seed and the three seed going into this, kept those games incredibly close. One of those games, the internet connection was pretty dodgy, so we have pretty good confidence that we can beat the three seed going into this.”
