“Harvey,” a new musical production at Wayne State College, will run from Nov. 20 to Nov. 23.
Harvey was written by Mary Chase in 1944 and created into a film for television.
It tells the story of an invisible rabbit named Harvey and his friend Elwood. It is a comedy that has attracted the hearts of many viewers for many decades.
Marybelle Hamilton, a sophomore at WSC, plays Ruth Kelly, a nurse at Chumley’s Rest, which is a psychiatric hospital.
Hamilton explains how she feels about the Harvey play and what she is most excited about.
“I think it’s [a] really interesting show concept and the expression of that from the actor, director and everyone who’s really worked on it have added so much to this winning piece and I’m really excited to be able to showcase it,” Hamilton said. “I’m most excited to perform in this show because there’s so much nuance working together with all the other actors.”
Hamilton also explains the inspiration in the play and the meaning behind it.
“I actually did not know what the inspiration behind this play was, so I just Googled it and I found out that Mary Chase wrote this play after her neighbor lost a son during World War II and it was just supposed to be sort of a feel good thing to relieve some of that emotional pressure,” Hamilton said. “I think that’s really interesting because Harvey could sort of be an apparition because of some war trauma and that is a really interesting reflection.”
Theater has been a big part of Hamilton’s life and it is one of those things that never really goes away for her.
It will always play a major role in her life.
Harvey has been a changing event for Hamilton and she is very thankful for her familiar castmates and the new ones she met along the way.
“I’m a really big fan of pretty much everybody on the cast and I’m incredibly thankful for Harvey because they’re so hilarious and so fun to be around and everybody’s put a lot of work into the show and it feels just really great to be involved,” Hamilton said.
Hamilton’s work on Harvey has been pure enjoyment for her and she is grateful for everyone who is going to come and see it.
“Absolutely, everyone with any sense of humor or any enjoyment for life should come see it, because it’s going to be incredible,” Hamilton said. “It’s a really great show and people put so much work into it. Theater as a whole concept is just so important and I really hope that people can enjoy that.”
