The Wayne State College Service Center Team sent out an email early in the morning on Monday, Oct. 20, regarding the Canvas app outagedue to the huge AWS outage that affected many apps and websites.
Some of the apps that went down included Snapchat, Amazon, McDonald’s app, and the big one that affected many students, Canvas.
Canvas was one of the apps that was most talked about when it shut down because many colleges use the app to submit assignments and quizzes, access class material, check grades, etc.
Students at WSC as well as other college students from other places had lots to say when it happened. The outage had some students worried about turning in their assignments on time and other students were frustrated because they couldn’t work on any other assignments for the day.
Joseph Dominguez, a freshman majoring in criminal justice, said he was upset went Canvas shut down because he had some assignments he wanted to get done.
“I was kind of mad because I needed to work on assignments that were due the next day,” Dominguez said. “I was also worried about turning in some of my assignments.”
Dahlia Hernandez, an elementary education major also said she was annoyed when Canvas shut down because she couldn’t work on any of her assignments.
“I was upset that Canvas was down because I had some assignments due that night, and I had no clue when Canvas would be back up,” Hernandez said. “I was also worried about what the professors might say.”
Nicole Diaz, a pre-professional radiography major, had a different reaction to the Canvas outage.
“When Canvas shutdown I was kind of hoping we wouldn’t have class because I wasn’t worried about any assignments or exams,” Diaz said.
Later that night, Canvas and many of the other apps that had been down became available again. Students then started to work on assignments they still had to get done that night.
“When it was working again, I went to turn in my assignments before they were counted late or missing,” Dominguez said.
“When Canvas came back up, I immediately looked at the announcements to see if my professors had said anything about the assignment that were due and then I started to work my assignment I had due that night,” Hernandez said.
